This series plunges us into the wave of violence that shook France in 2023. Over recent years, socio-economic concerns have steadily grown. In February 2023, the announcement of a new pension reform lit the powder keg. Unprecedented strike action then hit transportation, waste collection, refineries, and many other sectors across the country. Shortly after, by invoking Article 49.3, the government fueled further tensions and violence in a climate marked by frequent accusations of disproportionate use of force by law enforcement. On June 27, 2023, following the murder of Nahel Merzouk by a police officer during a traffic stop in Nanterre, the police were once again in the crosshairs and France went up in flames. Soon, many towns and cities became the setting for urban guerrilla warfare, particularly in the Paris region, and most notably in Nanterre, where the young man was from.
